  Conserving Devices

A liquid oxygen conserving device is sometimes referred to as a Helios portable tank.  This is a type of a liquid oxygen portable tank that gives a dose of oxygen only as the patient inhales.  These are used to lengthen the amount of time a portable oxygen tank will last for homecare patients who may be away from their base unit for an extended period of time and unable to re-fill it when needed.

There are also conserving regulators that sit on top of high pressure cylinders.  These work in the same way in that they deliver a bolus of oxygen each time the patient takes a breath.  This in turn causes the cylinder to last longer than it would with a conventional regulator.  This allows the homecare patient to use a smaller, less conspicuous, and lighter cylinder when they are away from home while not causing them to worry about running out of oxygen within a short period of time.

Patients must be tested to confirm they will be able to tolerate a conserving device and there must be a physician's permission to use.
