  BiPAP Units

BiPAP stands for bi-level positive airway pressure.  They are similar to CPAP machines, but “bi-level” means that two levels of pressure are set, one for inspiration and one for exhalation.  These machines are used for the same reason as a CPAP machine, but more commonly used for patients with more severe sleep apnea or patients who cannot tolerate higher pressures of a CPAP machine.  In hospital settings, BiPAP machines are used acutely for patients who are in pending respiratory failure to avoid intubation and mechanical ventilation.
